Being Dad: Day -27
The text message every expecting dad should send
After the threat of an early arrival, becoming a dad suddenly felt real. Anxiety hates activity, so I got busy. We now have a pram, bassinet and baby carrier with a dresser on the way.
More importantly, I decided to grab my phone and draft a message to the dads I know.
Here’s some of what they said.
I knew they would take the assignment seriously, but I did not expect their responses to be so profound.
As the replies rolled in, I felt a sense of calm and was immediately better equipped for what was to come. I was looking for practical advice, but I still can’t change a nappy or settle an upset baby. It’s been years since I’ve even held one.
What I got was a beautiful insight into what kind of dads these men are.
Expecting parents, send this message.
P.S. this was day -27 but if you want to see where the story really begins, my book Becoming Dad, written in real time during the first 50 days of dad-life, is available for pre-order now.

What an insightful thought to ask the question. It’s got the opposite feel of a young man asking the question of ‘What makes you successful.” It was never the money, fame or success but simply the small little ways to show up.
